Who are the Ferguson family?

My name is Ross Ferguson and I joined Hamilton Baptist Church at the beginning of April as their Associate Pastor. I am married to Miriam and have 3 children – Leah, Eve and Abbie. Oh and I better not forget… we have a dog too, her name is Rosie!

How has your first month at HBC been?

It has been great getting to know people and being a part of the worship on Sunday. One of the things that I fell in love with at HBC was just how amazing it is to be stood in a room with 250 people singing praises to Christ, it still makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. It has also been very busy, so many exciting new projects and developments!

What have been some of the challenges you have faced in this last month?

Learning peoples names! There is only one of me, so everyone knows who I am, but come on, learning 250 names… it’s hard! As with all new jobs it takes time to settle in and get used to the working environment, its not so much a challenge as something I am conscious about. Not everybody works in the same way. Pastor Andrew Agnew mentioned at my induction service that I like to get the job done, but I am learning that not all things can be done immediately.

Tell us about the exciting new projects you mentioned…

At the end of this month we will be launching our new Soul services for teenagers and young adults, I will tell you more about that in next weeks blog, but the excitement is building and I hope everyone will enjoy the evening. We are looking at potentially being involved in the local schools and university as well as doing activities and studies with our younger members of HBC to help them have that passion for Christ we talk about so much.

What is your favourite book/Author?

Recently I have been reading a number of books on Church Vision and Church Growth. Ray Evans book ‘Ready Steady Grow’ is fantastic, so is ‘I am a church member’ by Thom Rainer.

Any advice for those who are members of HBC or who plan to come to church?

HBC is a welcoming place, so please don’t feel worried or nervous in coming for the first time. We are simply a bunch of people who love Christ and want to live for him! To those who already come to HBC, why not try something new this week. Why not invite someone to church this Sunday? Or message someone to say you are praying for him or her, or be bold and get involved in a ministry! Being part of this family at HBC is not only exciting but also rewarding; it is a great feeling to serve alongside each other.

Finally, verse for the week?

Well on the jumper I am wearing today I have Philippians 3:8: “What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ”
